We thought we had life all figured out and embraced the idea of only having two children, so we sold and donated all of our baby items.
And then surprise, we are having baby number 3!
Embracing Chaos, the Carefree Way
With our first baby, we stressed over every detail: the perfect nursery, the perfect stroller, even the perfect blanket. This time, we’re giving ourselves grace.
When you have raised two children over the last 7+ years, and you don’t need to have all the things or be the perfect parent to have amazing kids.

After selling almost everything, we realized that the essentials are really, well, essential. Here is what I put on my list of baby item must haves this time around:
Bassinet – Makes it so so easy when the baby is in your room.
Baby Carrier / Wrap – Neither of my other two wanted to use the carrier/wrap, but this time around being hands free will make things easier for everyone
Travel Stroller Set – Being able to just put the infant carseat right on the stroller base is very convenient.
Pack n Play – Helpful to have a place on the first floor where baby can sleep.
Swaddle Blankets & Sleep Sacks – A couple of versatile options keep baby cozy without filling the closet.
Other Sleep Things – Sound machine (for the room and travel) and humidifier.
Simple Feeding Gear – A few bottles, a nursing pillow, LOTS of bibs and burp cloths, and an easy-to-clean high chair.
Diaper Basics – Diapers, wipes, diaper cream, and a changing pad. While I have mixed feelings on a diaper pail, I do have one on my list, but honestly if someone doesn’t get it for me, I’ll probably just use dog poop bags and just put it in the kitchen trash.
Bath Stuff – You just need a few wash cloths, a couple hooded towels, and I personally like a baby tub.
Lounging Things – Baby swing, bouncer, seat, play mat and a lounger.
Baby Brezza Formula Pro – One thing we saved, and it was a LIFE SAVER. I know this may not be a must for everyone, but we found it very helpful last time around.
Bottle Washer – We haven’t had one before, but the pros make me super excited to give it a try!
Backpack Diaper Bag – Last time we each had our own, this time around we are just going to share.
Things for Mom – Breast feeding things if you are choosing that method of feeding. Breast Pump (check with your insurance to see what they will cover), breast milk bags, on the go cooler bag and warmer, nipple pads for leaks.
I’ve put a few links to my favorite things all in one place so they are easy to find – LINKS HERE!
My Thoughts
- Cozy beats cute every time. You don’t need a Pinterest baby!
- Only buy what truly makes life easier. The extra stuff is just there to clutter the space. Buy less now and get things as you discover you need it later. In the past we have gotten everything upfront and things sat in their boxes or in the basement getting dusty. We will let time (and baby) tell us what else we need.
- Don’t be afraid of second hand – Say yes to free stuff and look for local consignment sales. Kids grow up so fast, save your money for experiences.
